Papers, prints and frames, explained

You do not need to know about art to choose a print. This page says what each option looks like, and which one to pick.

What is a giclée print?

A giclée print is a high-quality inkjet print made with long-lasting pigment inks. It is the usual way fine art is reproduced, so the picture holds its colour for a long time.

Premium papers

Grams per square metre, written gsm, is how thick a paper is. A higher number means a thicker, sturdier sheet.

  • Photo Rag, our default. A 308 gsm, 100% cotton-based, matte paper with a soft texture. Colours stay gentle, there is no glare, and it looks like a watercolour or a gallery print. A good choice for art, illustration, and photography you want to look classic.
  • Museum cotton. Warm white, with a little more tooth, so it feels more traditional under the hand.
  • Baryta. A fibre-based gloss paper with deeper blacks and a photographic sheen. A good choice for black-and-white and high-contrast pictures.

Other ways to print

  • Canvas. The picture is stretched over a wooden frame. It is ready to hang, and there is no glass.
  • Thin canvas. The same idea, on a slimmer stretcher.
  • Acrylic. The print sits behind, or is bonded to, a clear acrylic sheet. It looks glossy, vivid and modern. Acrylic is a Premium print.
  • Metal print. Coming soon. It is not available in the UK yet, so it cannot be ordered.
  • Cushion, mug and tote. Small gifts, printed with the picture.

Frames

Frame colours are Black, White, Natural and Antique gold. See the product page for frame details. Posters are posted in a tube. Framed prints, canvas and acrylic arrive ready to hang.

Which should I choose?

  • Best value. A Standard matte poster.
  • Best for a living room. Framed luster, or Photo Rag in a frame.
  • Most vivid. Acrylic.
  • Most classic. Photo Rag with a Natural frame.
  • A gift. A mug or a tote.

How big is it?

  • A4. The size of a sheet of printer paper, 210 × 297 mm.
  • A3. Twice an A4 sheet, 297 × 420 mm.
  • A2. Twice an A3 sheet, 420 × 594 mm.
  • 50 × 70 cm. A large poster. Measure the wall before you choose it.

Tip: measure the wall space and leave a margin around the frame so the picture is not pressed against a corner or a shelf.
